Mitchell, Bobusic grab Aust Open wildcards

Former Wimbledon junior runner-up Ben Mitchell booked his spot at next month’s Australian Open by downing Matt Reid in four sets in the wildcard playoff final.

Mitchell, the younger brother of Home and Away star Luke Mitchell, hung tough to beat No.3 seed Matt Reid 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-4.

Mitchell, who turned 20 last month, needed five sets before beating Matthew Barton in Saturday’s semis.

The heavy workload appeared to be taking a toll when Mitchell needed an injury timeout after dropping the third set against Reid in Sunday’s final, but he was able to regroup.

“I really didn’t know how I was going to be today,” said Mitchell, who was seeded fifth for the playoff event.

“I guess the competitive side of me came out and I really wanted to win.”

Mitchell made his senior grand slam debut at Melbourne Park in January this year where he ran into power-serving American John Isner in the first round.

West Australian Bojana Bobusic capped a fine week by trouncing Monique Adamczak in the women’s wildcard playoff decider.

Bobusic – whose commitment to the playoff meant she had to skip her brother’s wedding on Saturday – downed the third-seeded Adamczak 6-1 6-3.

The 25-year-old Bobusic had previously ousted No.2 seed Ashleigh Barty in the second round.

Bobusic is back to full fitness after battling two foot injuries in 2012.

“I’ve had a bit of a tough year with injuries,” she said.

“I wasn’t able to travel as much as I would have liked this year because of my foot, but along with that I’ve learnt how to manage it and look after it.”
