Miranda gives Brazil win over Argentina

Miranda’s stoppage-time header earned Brazil a 1-0 win over arch-rivals Argentina in their international soccer friendly in Jeddah on Tuesday.

Argentina were without star player Lionel Messi, who is spending an indefinite period away from the national team squad after the disappointment of their last 16 exit at the World Cup this summer.

Miranda headed over from a Neymar corner early on and then the defender saw an effort cleared off the line by Nicolas Otamendi.

Tite’s Brazil, who were eliminated by Belgium in the World Cup quarter-finals, shaded a dull first half, with Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar firing a free-kick into the wall before the break.

Argentina started the second period on the front foot and Giovani Lo Celso headed at Alisson from Angel Correa’s cross.

Mauro Icardi fired an effort wide of the near post and interim Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni sent Lautaro Martinez on for Juventus striker Paulo Dybala, who failed to break his international duck on his 16th appearance.

Casemiro zipped a dead ball effort inches past the post as Brazil finished the stronger, with Miranda eventually pouncing in stoppage time, nodding in another Neymar corner.

Earlier Japan defeated Uruguay 4-3 in a friendly international to continue a run of victories against teams from South and Central America since the World Cup.

Takumi Minamino (10th), Yuya Osako (36th), Ritsu Doan (59th) and Takumi Minamino (66th) scored for the home team in Saitama.

Gaston Pereiro (28th) and Edinson Cavani (57th) twice responded, while Jonathan Rodriguez was on target in the 75th to reduce the deficit after Japan had pulled two goals clear.

The Samurai Blue last week beat Panama 3-0 and Costa Rica by the same scoreline.

South Korea, with Portuguese coach Paulo Bento now in charge, meanwhile squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Panama in Cheonan.

The Koreans, who had beaten Uruguay 2-1 in Seoul on Friday, took an early lead when left-back Park Joo Ho netted after four minutes, and went further in front in the 33rd minute through Hwang In Beom.

Panama, who made their World Cup debut in the summer, pulled one back when Abdiel Arroyo headed in just before half-time, and levelled four minutes after the break through Rolando Blackburn.

In friendlies elsewhere, Uzbekistan beat World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar 2-0, Venezuela won 2-0 away against United Arab Emirates and Iran saw off Bolivia 2-1, with women allowed to watch from the stands for the first time in 40 years.

Oman drew 0-0 against Ecuador, China defeated Syria 2-0, and Indonesia drew 1-1 with Hong Kong.
