Medvedev into Shanghai Masters ATP final

Russian Daniil Medvedev is through to his third Masters final of the year after defeating Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in Shanghai.

The No.3 seed won Saturday’s first semi-final, 7-6 (7-5) 7-5, against sixth-seeded Tsitsipas of Greece.

The 23-year-old edged the first set thanks to two-straight errors from Tsitsipas in the tie-break.

Despite missing a chance to serve out the match at 5-4, Medvedev rallied to a second break and completed the contest in one hour and 36 minutes.

“He (Tsitsipas) was playing (a) great match, I think, and I think he was a bit unlucky because he was playing quite surprising for me,” Medvedev said.

“When I was serving for the match, he changed it again, surprised me again, which I made some mistakes that I shouldn’t do but I’m really glad to be in the final after a tough match.”

Tsitsipas had accounted for world No.1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic in thre sets in Friday’s quarter-finals.

The latest win means Medvedev enters a sixth-straight, where he will aim to win his second Masters title after claiming August’s Cincinnati trophy.

“It’s a great achievement, I’m proud of myself and, hopefully, I get the win tomorrow,” said Medvedev.

In the second semi-final, German fifth seed Alexander Zverev, fresh off his three-set last-eight defeat of Roger Federer, will face Italian No.11 seed Matteo Berrettini.

World No.4 Medvedev continues a stellar season, having reached his first grand-slam final at the US Open and his first Masters decider at the Rogers Cup.

He lost on both occasions to world No.2 Rafael Nadal, but had since shown persistent improvement to earn the fourth berth at November’s season-ending ATP Finals in London.

“Every loss, I learn from,” said Medvedev.

“For example, US Open final, a great match, a great final and I was disappointed to lose so I approach the match the same way, whether it’s first round or a final.”

Tsitsipas, ranked seventh in the world, has also qualified to make his debut at the ATP Finals.
