Australian Marinko Matosevic on Sunday stormed into the third round of the Indian Wells tennis tournament in California, with a straight-sets demolition of world No.14 Juan Monaco.

He beat the Argentine 7-5 6-0 and will play American 23rd seed Sam Querrey or qualifier Ivo Karlovic of Croatia for a berth in the last 16.

Australian qualifier Matt Ebden was hoping to join Matosevic and Lleyton Hewitt in the third round later on Sunday when he was scheduled to take on Bulgarian 31st seed Grigor Dimitrov.

World No.3 Andy Murray shook off some first-match nerves to post a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory over Russian Evgeny Donskoy.

Murray hadn’t played for six weeks, since falling to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final.

Weighing on him even more was the memory of crashing out of his opening match at Indian Wells in the past two years.

“I’ve struggled here the last couple of years,” he said. “I haven’t won a match. I was a little nervous.”

Murray, however, found his range and made short work of the second and third sets.

The US Open champion next faces Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun, a 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) winner over 26th-seeded Slovakian Martin Klizan.

World No.1 and top seed Djokovic was also due to launch his campaign on Sunday with a second-round match against Italy’s Fabio Fognini.

Seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina defeated Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-3 6-4 to reach the third round, while No.12 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia beat Spaniard Albert Ramos 7-6 (9-7) 6-2.

Other second-round winners included Carlos Berlocq of Argentina, German Bjorn Phau and American 32nd seed Mardy Fish.

In women’s third-round action, sixth seeded Italian Sara Errani downed Johanna Larsson of Sweden 6-3 6-1, and Klara Zakopalova, the Czech 19th seed, accounted for Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, seeded 12th, 6-4 7-5.

No.13 seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia defeated Mallory Burdette of the US 6-3 4-6 6-2.
