Masur named Sydney academy coach

Former Davis Cup coach Wally Masur has been appointed Tennis Australia’s Sydney national academy head coach.

Masur will oversee coaching some of NSW’s top junior tennis players, aged 10 to 17-years-old, after taking over the role at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre from Liam Smith.

Smith moves to Melbourne as a national academy coach with Tennis Australia developmental manager Scott Draper, and will work at the new National Tennis Centre, part of a $366 million redevelopment of the Melbourne Park precinct.

Masur, a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist and former world No.15, coached Australia’s Davis Cup team from 2001 to 2005.

Draper said that level of experience would help shape the next generation of tennis players.

“He has the tennis insight to develop New South Wales’s leading juniors into world-class athletes,” said Draper.
