Marinko, Casey win at California tennis

Australian Marinko Matosevic won through to the second round of the Indian Wells ATP Masters and WTA hardcourt tournament on Friday in California and compatriot Casey Dellacqua advanced to the third round.

Matosevic beat American Bradley Klahn 6-4 6-4 to set up a round-two showdown with Spanish 16th seed Tommy Robredo.

Fellow Australians Sam Groth and John-Patrick Smith lost their opening-round matches.

Groth suffered a heartbreaking 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-4) defeat to Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, while Smith went down 6-4 6-4 to Robin Haase of the Netherlands.

In the women’s, Dellacqua scored an impressive 1-6 6-3 6-1 win over Belgian 19th seed Kirsten Flipkens. She will line up in the third round against 13th-seeded Italy Roberta Vinci who accounted for American Madison Keys 6-3 6-3.

A hobbled Victoria Azarenka of Belarus lost in the second round, falling in straight sets to American Lauren Davis.

The third seed was hindered by a left foot injury, delivering a dozen double-faults in a 6-0 7-6 (7-2) defeat by the 66th-ranked Davis.

“Basically all I had was my fighting spirit today,” said Azarenka, playing her first tournament since an Australian Open quarter-final exit.

“I wanted to give my best shot,” Azarenka said. “Obviously, it was maybe a little bit too early. But I gave a fight. I’m pretty proud of whatever I did today.”

Davis notched her first win against a top-10 player. She booked a third-round meeting with compatriot Varvara Lepchenko, who upset 29th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 6-2.

Second seed and world No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska reached the third round with a 6-4 6-3 win over British qualifier Heather Watson and next faces Germany’s Annika Beck who beat 30th-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2 3-6 6-3.

“The first match is always challenging,” said Radwanska, who – like all 32 men’s and women’s seeds in the $US12 million ($A13.25 million) tournament – enjoyed a first-round bye.

Women’s top seed Li Na, the Australian Open champion, will open against compatriot Zheng Jie on Saturday when defending champion and fourth seed Maria Sharapova takes on Germany’s Julia Goerges.

Men’s top seed and defending champion Rafael Nadal, third-seeded Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka, fifth-ranked Andy Murray and No.7 Roger Federer will also battle for third-round berths.

Nadal faces Czech veteran Radek Stepanek, Wawrinka is up against Croatian Ivo Karlovic, Murray tackles Czech Lukas Rosol and Federer plays Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Elsewhere on Friday, seventh-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic, ninth seed Sara Errani of Italy and 10th-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki all moved into the third round.
