Maria Sharapova is the new $2 favourite with Sportingbet Australia to win the 2013 Australian Open following the shock quarter final exit of former favourite Serena Williams.
Williams was knocked out of the tournament in three sets by 19 year old compatriot Sloane Stephens. Williams was a clear cut $1.03 favourite to win her quarter final against Stephens who was a $12.50 rank outsider.
“Stephens was 100/1 to win the tournament before round 1 but she’s now been crunched into $13,” said Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan.
“One smart punter will be laughing after putting $100 on Stephens at $81 to be Australian Open champion just before her match with Serena,” Sullivan said.
Victoria Azarenka is a $2.25 second favourite to win the tournament with 2011 French Open champion Li Na a $9 third favourite.
