It has been twelve years since Lleyton Hewitt won his last Grand Slam tennis tournament but punters are rallying behind the former world number one to win this month’s Australian Open after his impressive victory over Roger Federer in the final of the Brisbane International.
Hewitt’s odds of being 2014 Australian Open Champion have been sliced from $201 into $101 at Sportingbet after a flurry of bets for the 32-year-old.
“Hewitt hasn’t been this popular with punters prior to a Grand Slam for years,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
“While Hewitt is still very long odds to triumph in Melbourne, it’s a sure bet that he will fight for every single point in all of his matches,” Brown said.
Federer remains at $15 with Sportingbet for the Australian Open which makes him fifth favourite behind Novak Djokovic ($2.25), Rafael Nadal ($3.00), Andy Murray ($3.75) and Juan Martin Del Potro ($13).
In the women’s draw, Serena Williams’ odds of winning her sixth Australian Open title have firmed from $2 into $1.91 at Sportingbet. Victoria Azarenka is a $4 second favourite ahead of Maria Sharapova at $7. Samantha Stosur is a $26 eighth favourite.
