Respected French newspaper L’Equipe has tipped Bernard Tomic to be in the world’s top 10 in 2018 – but found no room for Australian teenage sensation Nick Kyrgios.
L’Equipe gazed into its crystal ball on Saturday to declare Bulgarian youngster Grigor Dimitrov – known as Baby Fed in tennis circles – would be world No.1 in five years’ time.
The sports publication had French player Benoit Paire at No.2, followed by reigning US Open champion Andy Murray at No.3, Canadian Milos Raonic at No.4 and current top dog Novak Djokovic at No.5.
Djokovic and Murray will both be 31 in 2018.
Despite Tomic’s current troubles with his father and coach John being banned from ATP and grand slam events, L’Equipe believes the 20-year-old world No.61 will be ranked seventh in five years.
But they don’t think reigning world No.1 junior and Australian Open junior champion Nick Kyrgios – who made a dream grand slam senior debut at Roland Garros this week – will be in the top 10.
Rounding out L’Equipe’s 2018 top 10 is Japan’s Kei Nishikori at No.6, Latvian Ernests Gulbis at No.8, Jerzy Janowicz at No.9 and American Jack Sock at No.10.
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Djokovic, Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all featured in the top 10 five years ago and remain there in 2013.
