Kyrgios reaches Atlanta quarter-finals

Nick Kyrgios has won his first match since Wimbledon to advance to the Atlanta Open quarter-finals with a rain-interrupted straight-sets victory over American Jared Donaldson.

Kyrgios, the second seed, progressed 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 and will face fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, a 6-1 6-3 winner over Julien Benneteau.

The victory is a welcome boost to Kyrgios’s US Open hopes after the Australian No.1 suffered a surprise first-round loss last week at the Toronto Masters to Wimbledon junior champion Denis Shapovalov.

Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka beat fourth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine 6-3 2-6 6-1 to also advance.

The 20-year-old Nishioka will face Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos, a 6-1 6-4 winner over Germany’s Tobias Kamke.

On Wednesday, three-time defending champion John Isner overpowered France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-4 6-0 to set up an all-American quarter-final against eighth-seeded Taylor Fritz.

Isner has reached the finals in Atlanta five of the previous six years.

In the other quarter-final, seventh-seeded Donald Young will play fellow American Reilly Opelka.
