Kyrgios makes strong start in juniors

Australian world No.1 junior Nick Kyrgios has made a strong start to his campaign in the boys singles at Wimbledon.

The top seed defeated Britain’s Evan Hoyt 6-4 6-3 in the first round on Monday.

The 18-year-old, the junior Australian Open champion, will next face Austrian Lucas Miedler, who beat Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 6-4 4-6 9-7.

Kyrgios failed to earn a wild card for the men’s draw at the All England Club, despite defeating Czech Radek Stepanek on his grand slam debut at the French Open last month.

Kyrgios was the only winner of the three Australian boys in action on Monday.

Jay Andrijic lost to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 6-4, while Harry Bourchier fell to Brit Julian Cash 6-4 6-2.

Thanasi Kokkinakis and Bradley Mousley won their opening-round matches on Saturday.

Lizette Cabrera lost to Turkish 16th seed Ipek Soylu 6-3 6-4 to end Australia’s involvement in the girls singles after Sara Tomic was also defeated in the first round.
