Kvitova, Svitolina in WTA final in China

Petra Kvitova will take on Elina Svitolina for the title at the WTA Elite Trophy after a Saturday semi-final defeat of Chinese home favourite Zhang Shuai 6-2 6-2.

Two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova holds a 5-1 record over her Ukrainian challenger, who booked her place in Sunday’s decider after defeating Briton Johanna Konta in a 2-6 6-1 6-4 comeback at the industrial city of Zhuhai, 50km west of Hong Kong.

World No.13 Kvitova could use success at the event for players ranked ninth-20th to complete a resurrection at the end of a poor season after finding a regular home in the top 10 until 2016.

Kvitova will be playing a third final in her last four tournaments, the others coming in Wuhan and Luxembourg.

Kvitova and wildcard Zhang came to their match undefeated in group play.

The Czech earned a quick 5-1 lead to establish superiority and was never threatened on her way to the victory in 66 minutes.

The Kvitova serve let her down, though, as she produced five double-faults while breaking four times.

Konta’s season meanwhile ended in disappointment after she was nudged from a place in the the WTA Finals in Singapore last week by the late qualification of Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The Briton had worked to rehab an abdominal injury which had forced her to quit after one match in Hong Kong in early October.
