Konta tops Venus for first WTA title

Britain’s Johanna Konta outslugged top seed Venus Williams to capture her first WTA singles title with a 7-5 5-7 6-2 triumph in Stanford.

Konta held her nerve to win the final in three sets after squandering a 4-1 lead in the second set.

Williams netted her forehand return on the third match point, Konta’s tactic to stand some 10 feet behind the baseline to return Williams’ serve coming up trumps.

The 25-year-old Konta also upset Williams with a straight-sets victory in the first round at this year’s Australian Open.

Konta had become the first British woman to reach the championship match at Stanford since Virginia Wade was runner-up in 1981.
