Kokkinakis wins French Open qualifier

Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis has taken his first step towards qualifying for the French Open with victory over Jaimee Floyd Angele.

The South Australian battled back from a set down to beat French 18-year-old Jaimee Floyd Angele 1-6 6-3 6-1.

It was Kokkinakis’ first competitive outing since injuring his knee in an on-court fall at last month’s Madrid Masters.

The 22-year-old and Bernard Tomic are among six Australians in the men’s qualifying event at Roland Garros.

Akira Santillan has also battled through to the second round of qualifying on Monday with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Japan’s Go Soeda.

Marc Polmans, Alex Bolt and Jason Kubler have also entered the gruelling qualifying process as they attempt to join Nick Kyrgios, John Millman, Matt Ebden, Jordan Thompson and teenage wildcard Al de Minaur in the 128-man main draw of the clay-court grand slam.
