Klein bows out in Open qualifying

Former bad boy Brydan Klein’s first trip back to the Australian Open as a Brit has ended in a first-round qualifying loss to local hope Dane Propoggia.

The Perth-born Klein struggled to win the most important points against his some-times doubles partner Propoggia, the world No.323, before going down 6-4 6-4 on Wednesday.

It was a good day for the Australian contingent, with reigning US Open junior champion Omar Jasika taking full advantage of his wildcard to advance to the second round.

Jasika, who last year became the first person in 28 years to win the boys’ singles and doubles crowns at Flushing Meadows, triumphed 7-5 6-4 over Frenchman Mathias Bourgue.

Jasika’s second-round clash will be an all-Australian affair against John-Patrick Smith, who downed temperamental German teenager Alexander Zverev 7-6 (10-8) 6-4.

Propoggia won just two more points than Klein, 25, but the Australian was able to secure three crucial service breaks.

Klein, now ranked 253 in the world, has struggled to live up to the expectations raised when he won the Australian Open junior title as an 18-year-old.

He threw in his lot with Britain – the country of his mother’s birth – in 2013 after a series of misdemeanours and a strained relationship with Tennis Australia.

TA finally cut off all funding to Klein in 2010, a year after he was fined $14,000 and suspended for six months for calling South African opponent Raven Klaasen a “kaffir”.

Also among the Australian qualifying winners on Wednesday were teenager Blake Mott, who downed Belgian Arthur de Greef 6-4 7-5, and Marc Polmans, who beat Spain’s Jordi Samper-Montana 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.

Ben Mitchell lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to Ukrainian Illya Marchencko, Gavin van Peperzeel was outclassed 6-2 6-3 by Belgian Maxime Authom and Harry Bourchier won just two games to also bow out 6-0 6-2 to Aleksandr Nedovyesov from Kazakhstan 6-0 6-2.
