Angelique Kerber’s first attempt at a career grand slam has ended abruptly with the German becoming the first major French Open casualty.
The defending Wimbledon champion enjoyed a resurgence last year after 2016 triumphs a the US and Australian Opens.
But the fifth seed in Paris lasted little more than an hour in Sunday’s tournament opener against Russian Anastasia Potapova, losing 6-4 6-2.
