Jordan Thompson falls in Istanbul Open

Jordan Thompson has failed in his bid to join fellow Australian Bernard Tomic in the quarter-finals of the Istanbul Open.

Thompson was mercilessly dispatched by Argentine third seed Diego Schwartzmann 6-1 6-3 on the red clay of Istanbul on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Australian was unable to make any inroads against the steady Argentine, who was never broken in the encounter.

Schwartzmann will now play Serbian world No.84 Dusan Lajovic in the quarters after he rallied from a set down to beat Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny 3-6 6-0 6-3.

Continuing a good day for the Serbs 21-year-old Laslo Djere also moved into the quarters with a 6-4 6-3 upset of fourth-seeded Italian Pablo Lorenzi.

There he will face countryman Viktor Troicki, who squeezed past Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-6 (7-5) in the fianl match of the day.

Tomic won’t be in action till late in the day on Friday when he takes on top-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic.

Tomic has never managed to take a set off the world No.6 in their four meetings to date but the duo have never played on clay.
