Preview:

“Yeah, I think I just played a really good match today. I had a pretty clear understanding of what I needed to do to win today. I didn’t think it would be probably the score line it was, but it didn’t feel like that out there. It never feels easy. It doesn’t matter who you play,” Dellacqua said after the match.

She will be hoping for a similar result when she confronts Jie Zheng of China on Friday. Zheng enters the third round after defeating the 12th seed Roberta Vinci in the first round in straight sets. The 30-year-old then defeated American teenager Madison Keys 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 to set up the clash with Dellacqua.

Dellacqua and Zheng have no head to head record and will meet for the first time on Friday. If temperatures continue to soar it might play to the Australian’s advantage who said the heat does not bother her too much: “Yeah, I don’t mind it. My body feels great when it’s warm. I really struggle a bit more probably in cooler conditions just to get the body going.

I don’t mind the heat. Obviously there’s a point where you have to be sensible. If it gets too hot, it is dangerous. Today it was fine out there.”

Dellacqua will have the support of the home crowd, but Zheng as the experience and ranking behind her. Zheng was also a semi finalist at the Open in 2010. Both players are also established doubles players, having both won at least one Grand Slam doubles title. Zheng won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006 whilst Dellacqua won the French Open mixed doubles title in 2011. You could expect this match to be a close one.

Dellacqua and Zheng will play on Rod Laver Arena, not before 2:00pm (3:00am GMT) on January 17th 2014.
