Preview:

One of the hardest working athletes on the ATP Tour – David Ferrer  locks horns with Frenchman Jeremy Chardy for a place in the Fourth Round of the Australian Open. Both players won their previous encounters in Four Sets and would be looking to reserve some energy going into the Second Week. With contrasting playing styles, it would be interesting to see who comes out on top!

Coming into this tournament after a Semifinal stint at the Heineken Open, Ferrer comes into this tournament ranked at a personal best No.3 in the World and would be looking to maintain it for some time. A player with great on court speed and a never say die attitude, the Spanish No.2 made an early exit at the Qatar Open but has not let that slip come in his way.

A favorite to reach the latter end of almost every tournament he features in, Ferrer is one player who can never be counted out of any situation due to his never say die attitude. Forcing errors from his opponents by getting almost every ball back, Ferrer’s counterpunching is one of the best on tour and that’s why he is a tough player to face on clay.

His opponent, Chardy comes into this tournament ranked just outside the Top-30 at No.31 in the World but is seeded at No.29. A very accurate serve followed by a big swinging forehand, the Frenchman had a good 2013 season and that saw him reach a personal best ranking of 25 on the ATP Charts. With 1 ATP Tour Title to his name, Chardy reached the Semifinals of the Brisbane International before coming to this event, starting his 2014 season on a positive note.

He reached the Quarterfinals here last year and would be looking to match his performance this year too as he would lose some valuable ATP Points and thus see a dip in his ranking.

Head to head: This is the Sixth Time the two players will be playing with Ferrer leading their Head to head 4-1. They last met at Wimbledon in 2010 with Ferrer winning that match in 5 sets.
