Inglis beaten in 1st round of Open juniors

Maddison Inglis has endured a tough time in the singles at the Australian Open, suffering straight-sets defeats in the women’s and girls events at Melbourne Park.

The 18-year-old from Perth earned her spot in the senior draw on merit by winning last month’s wildcard playoff final.

But she was afforded no favours by the draw, losing 6-3 6-0 to No.21 seed Ekaterina Makarova from Russia.

Makarova reached the semis last year at Melbourne Park and will play Britain’s Johanna Konta in the fourth round on Monday.

Inglis had higher hopes of progressing much deeper into the girl’s competition, only to crash out at the first hurdle on Sunday in a 7-5 6-1 loss to Spain’s Eva Guerrero Alvarez.

But it was a pretty good day overall for the local juniors, with six of the 12 involved in singles action advancing to the second round.

Violet Apisah, Jaimee Fourlis and Petra Hule all won in the girls competition.

Apisah, who was born and raised in Port Moresby before shifting to Australia, outclassed Taiwanese qualifier I-Hsuan Cho 6-3 6-1.

Fourlis accounted for Britain’s Ema Lazic 6-4 6-3 and Hule downed American Maria Mateas 6-1 6-4.

Australian boys Lucas Vuradin, Max Purcell and Oliver Anderson also won their opening-round matches.
