Impressive Barty sees off Konta in China

Ashleigh Barty has recorded one of the biggest wins of her career by defeating world No.7 Briton Johanna Konta 6-0 4-6 7-6 (7-3) at the Wuhan Open

The Queenslander dominated the Sydney-born Konta in the opening set but let the fifth-seeded Briton back into the match as he won the second set.

Konta looked set to advance to the last 16 thanks to an early break in the deciding set.

However, Barty held her nerve with Konta serving for the match and leading 30-15 by breaking back to level the set at 5-5.

Boosted by that escape, the unseeded world No.37 from Ipswich dominated the subsequent tiebreak from the first point to set up a clash against Agnieszka Radwanska or Julia Goerges.

Samantha Stosur’s tournament was ended by Swiss wild card Jill Teichmann has prevailed 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Konta wasn’t the only big name to depart, US Open champion Sloane Stephens and runner-up Madison Keys were also knocked out.

In their first matches since the final at Flushing Meadows, the 17th-ranked Stephens lost to Wang Qiang of China 6-2 6-2 while the 12th-ranked Keys was beaten by Varvara Lepchenko 6-2,7-6 (7-4).

Former world No.1 Angelique Kerber also exited, going down to Caroline Garcia of France 3-6 6-3 6-1.
