Hopman Cup secures five-year extension

The Hopman Cup will remain in Perth for at least the next five years, with the mixed-teams event on track to set a new attendance record this summer.

The West Australian government, through Tourism WA, has extended its contract with the ITF and Tennis Australia to host the Hopman Cup at Perth Arena until at least 2022.

The tournament is in its 29th year, and is on the verge of setting a new attendance record.

The previous attendance record across the event was 104,468 in the tournament’s first appearance at Perth Arena in 2013.

A big crowd in Saturday night’s final between France and the US is expected to break that record, pushing this year’s attendance figure past 105,000.

Former world No.1 Roger Federer has been a huge drawcard this year, helping push attendances to record levels.

The biggest tennis crowd in WA history gathered at Perth Arena on Wednesday night when 13,785 spectators cheered on Federer’s Switzerland against Germany.

The Hopman Cup has been a feature on Perth’s sporting calendar since making its debut in 1988.
