Hewitt posts first-round win in Atlanta

Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt has kicked off his hardcourt campaign with a first-round victory over Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin at the Atlanta Open.

It took the former world No.1 less than 90 minutes to post the 6-4 6-4 win on Tuesday, almost a month out from the US Open.

Hewitt next faces American wildcard Rhyne Williams, with another win booking him his third quarter-finals berth in four tournaments.

The veteran was a finalist on grass at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships two weeks ago, but lost to Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.

Fellow Australian Matthew Ebden is yet to play his first-round match in Atlanta against Ivo Karlovic.

Meanwhile, Sam Stosur’s hardcourt campaign begins on Wednesday at the Bank of the West Classic in California. She will face world No.83 Olga Govortsova of Belarus after a first-round bye.
