Halep closes in on world No.1 ranking

Simona Halep is a win away from delivering Australian super-coach Darren Cahill his third world No.1 after storming into the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Halep will leapfrog Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the rankings if she scuppers home hopes of a first British women’s singles champion in 40 years with victory over Johanna Konta on Tuesday at the All England Club.

The Romanian is refusing to count her chickens after blowing an opportunity to go top at the French Open when she lost the final to Jelena Ostapenko from a set and a service break up.

“Konta is a pretty good player. She’s top 10,” Halep said after denying Victoria Azarenka a quarter-final berth in the former world No.1’s return to grand slam tennis after becoming a mother last December.

“I’m here just to give my best. I know that it’s going to be a very difficult match, like everyone.

“But I believe that I have a chance. I’m ready for it. So we will see what is going to happen tomorrow.”

A two-time grand slam bridesmaid, Halep insists her focus is firmly on winning Wimbledon, not the top ranking.

But if the 25-year-old does soar to world No.1, Halep will become Cahill’s third charge to do so after Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi.

At 20, Hewitt became the youngest men’s year-end No.1 in history in 2001 under the South Australian mentor.

Then Agassi, 20 months later at 32, became the oldest to reach the summit after linking with Cahill.
