Halep and Venus secure Miami Open wins

Romanian second seed Simona Halep has fought back from a set down to defeat Slovenian Polona Hercog in a challenging third-round match at the Miami Open.

Hercog, ranked 93rd in the world, pushed Halep all the way in the second set but the Romanian dominated the tie-break to turn the match around and eventually triumph 5-7 7-6(7-1) 6-2.

She will face three-time Miami Open champion Venus Williams in the fourth round after the American beat Russian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-1.

On Saturday, Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu beat Angelique Kerber for the second time in a week, and the result left hard feelings.

The Canadian teen reached the fourth round of the Miami Open, winning 6-4 4-6 6-1 after taking a medical timeout after seven games to receive treatment on her right arm.

“Biggest drama queen ever,” Kerber told Andreescu while offering only a brusque handshake following the match.

Andreescu also defeated Kerber in the Indian Wells final for her first career title.

Japanese world No.1 Naomi Osaka was on Saturday stunned by 27th seeded Taiwanese Hsieh Su-wei, while Serena Williams was forced to withdraw with a knee injury earlier on Sunday.

Two other seeds also went out. Latvian 11th seed Anastasija Sevastova lost 1-6 6-2 6-3 to Kazakh Yulia Putintseva and 25th-seeded American Danielle Collins went down 7-5 6-1 to China’s Wang Yafan.
