The big hitters of women’s tennis have all been put on the same side of the draw at the WTA’s year-end finals event in Singapore.
The world’s top eight players were drawn in two separate pools for the round-robin event at a gala dinner on Friday night, called the Red and White groups.
It was the White group that assembled the most firepower, with the two 2017 grand slam winners that are in the tournament, drawn in the group.
Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, Venus Williams and French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko are set to do battle there.
World No.1 Simona Halep leads the Red group, alongside Elina Svitolina, Caroline Wozniacki and Caroline Garcia.
Muguruza said the quality of players made it a very difficult event to come away from as the winner.
“I feel like we’re playing a semi-final or a final. It’s very exciting,” Muguruza said.
“You have to play your very best to win. I have some big hitters in my group.”
Halep said although the White group got the attention, the Red group would be tough as well.
“I knew that every match is going to be tough here, so I didn’t expect an easy group,” she said.
During the event each player will play the others in their group, with the top two in each going through to a semi-final and then the final.
The event, which begins on Sunday, is missing some star power without the likes of Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber.
Also at the dinner, Muguruza was named the WTA’s player of the year.
