Gavrilova withdraws from Sydney tennis

Australia’s Hopman Cup hero Daria Gavrilova has been forced to withdraw from the Sydney International with an abdominal injury.

The world No.36, who alongside Nick Kyrgios broke the country’s 17-year Hopman Cup title drought on Saturday night, said on Monday her left abdominal muscle needed time to heal before her Australian Open campaign starts in Melbourne next week.

The 21-year-old had been due to face Puerto Rico’s world No.92 qualifier Monica Puig in the women’s opening round at Olympic Park on Monday.
