Gavrilova left hanging in Sydney rain

A thunderstorm has left Daria Gavrilova hanging as she eyes a second-round showstopper with Samantha Stosur at the Sydney International.

The gloomy wet weather stopped play on Tuesday night with Gavrilova one game away from winning her all-Australian clash with wildcard Olivia Rogowska.

Gavrilova was leading 6-4 1-6 5-4, with Rogowska about to serve to stay in the match on Ken Rosewall Arena, when the umpire called both players from the court.

Should she win, Gavrilova would face a friendly grudge match on Wednesday night against Stosur, who earlier progressed to the last 16 with a plucky 4-6 7-5 6-3 win over German Carina Witthoeft.

As well as a quarter-final spot at stake, Gavrilova and Stosur would both get a shot at revenge after jostling last year for the Australian No.1 ranking.

In their last encounter, Stosur denied Gavrilova in a keenly contested three-set final on clay at last year’s Strasbourg International.

Despite the defeat, Gavrilova a fortnight later ended Stosur’s record 442-week unbroken reign as Australia’s queen of the court.

The pair are locked at 1-1 in head-to-head meetings, with Gavrilova beating Stosur in their first clash at the 2015 Canadian Masters.

Stosur knows she needs to be prepared for either of her compatriots, be it world No.25 Gavrilova or the 165th-ranked Rogowska, who was last week also rewarded with an Australian Open wildcard after winning the domestic Pro Tour series.

“Don’t think I have ever played Liv out on tour. That will be a new one. Dash, I have played a couple of times,” Stosur said.

“I have actually practised with Liv twice this week already. Dasha warmed me up this morning. We all know each other very well.

“For them, and then for me to play either of them, there is not really going to be any secrets out there.

“It’s going to be a really great chance, I think, for all of us to try and get through.

“We’ll give it our best and shake hands at the end and that will be it.”
