Gajdosova edges out Dokic for singles spot

Jarmila Gajdosova has been handed Australia’s No.2 singles spot at this weekend’s Fed Cup tie against Switzerland in Fribourg.

Fed Cup captain Dave Taylor selected the world No.40 ahead of world No.67 Jelena Dokic.

Samantha Stosur will open the tie for Australia on Saturday against world No.244 Timea Bacsinszky before Gajdosova takes on world No.124 Stefanie Voegele in the World Group II tie.

Following the reverse singles on Sunday, Dokic and Casey Dellacqua will meet Bacsinszky and Amra Sadikovic in the doubles on the temporary indoor claycourt.

Dual passport holder Romina Oprandi, who recently switched allegiances from Italy to Switzerland, is not eligible to play for the country of her birth until the next round of Fed Cup fixtures in April.

Oprandi is Switzerland’s top-ranked player at No.63 and reached the third round of the Australian Open last month.

For Australia to return to the elite eight-nation World Group next year, they must win this weekend and defeat one of the World Group first round losers on April 21-22.
