Fourlis, Myers in Aust Open playoff final

A first grand-slam appearance awaits Jaimee Fourlis or unseeded hopeful Abbie Myers after winning through to the final of the Australian Open wildcard playoffs.

Fourlis, 17, defeated sixth seed Olivia Tjandramulia in straight sets in her semi-final on Saturday at Melbourne Park, while Myers, 22, did it tougher, overcoming second seed Alison Bai in three sets in blustery conditions.

Both are within touching distance of the 2017 Australian Open, a tournament neither has qualified for in their careers.

They will face off on Sunday – before the men’s final between junior US Open champion Omar Jasika and circuit grinder John-Patrick Smith – on a day that will change one of their careers.

Fourlis – ranked world No.425 – told the Tennis Australia website it would be an awesome feeling to take her place in January in the field of 128.

“That’s everyone’s goal, everyone’s dream, to play a grand slam,” she said.

“And to do it this way – if I won it – that would be even better. It would be awesome.”

Myers had never beaten Bai in four matches but prevailed in two hours and 11 minutes.

The world No.600 said she was in shock to reach the final and would need to shut out the prize on offer to play well enough to win it.

“I’m just taking just one shot at a time and not thinking about the outcome,” she said.

“The outcome is a main-draw wildcard, but you just have to scale that back, think one shot at a time.”

The finals will be played back-to-back on Sunday, beginning with the women’s final at 11am.
