Flipkens beats Bencic in Connecticut

Belgian Kirsten Flipkens has beaten Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-1 4-6 7-5 in the opening round of the Connecticut Open.

Flipkens, who upset Venus Williams at the Olympics, had lost in the second round of qualifying in New Haven but was moved into the main draw after Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko withdrew earlier on Tuesday with a right knee injury.

Flipkins, ranked 68th, became the fourth lucky loser to advance.

Sweden’s Johanna Larsson also beat seventh-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 7-5 6-2.

The 28-year-old got into the main draw when Svetlana Kuznetsova withdrew with a shoulder injury.

Ekaterina Makarova of Russia is the first player to advance to the third round of the tournament.

The Olympic gold medallist in doubles beat qualifier Anatasija Sevastova of Latvia 6-3 6-2.
