Daria Gavrilova has made her earliest Australian Open exit in four years after being bounced out in the opening round by Tamara Zidansek from Slovenia.
The feisty Gavrilova had reached the last 16 at Melbourne Park in 2016 and 2017 but there was to be no repeat this year as she bowed out 7-5 6-3 in one hour and 44 minutes on Tuesday.
Zidansek advanced to a second-round clash against either reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka or or Poland’s Magda Linette.
