Fired-up Federer looking to Toronto

Roger Federer says he’s fully motivated for the second half of the season, with the Wimbledon finalist ready to charge ahead at next week’s Toronto Masters.

The Swiss world No.3 will make his start on Tuesday evening in the second round after a bye, facing the winner from Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz or Canadian wild card Peter Polansky.

Federer, who turns 33 next Friday, takes the second seeding behind world No.1 Novak Djokovic after Rafael Nadal withdrew from both the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters events due to a right wrist injury suffered in training at home on Mallorca.

“You feel more relaxed after the third grand slam of the season (Wimbledon) has passed,” Federer said.

“The stretch between clay and grass is a tough one.

“Now I’m mentally relaxed after four months off with (his family of wife and four children). I feel like we’re half way through and I’m ready to attack in the second half of the season.

“I’m excited to be back and playing in Toronto after four years.”

Federer missed out on his eighth Wimbledon title a month ago as he lost to Djokovic in a dramatic five-set final.

The winner of 17 grand slam titles owns two Toronto honours from 2004 and 2006 and lost to Andy Murray in the 2010 final. He did not play Canada in 2012 or 2013.

“It’s been a good year overall,” said Federer, who will put his Wimbledon disappointment behind as he concentrates on the next eight months of hardcourt play through Miami in late March, 2015.

“I’m happy to be healthy again and playing well,” said the champion in Dubai and Halle this season.

“I’m enjoying myself and I’m able to play in every event I want to play after having back troubles last season.

“So here I am with nothing to lose; I’m second seed and I hope to take advantage of my draw, even if they are tough all around. I want to make sure I’m well-prepared and hope it all pays off.”

The newly married Djokovic will start play against either Czech Radek Stepanek or Gael Monfils. Czech Tomas Berdych, is seeded fourth, ahead of Spain’s David Ferrer. Canadian Milos Raonic takes the sixth seeding.
