Federer v Djokovic in 2nd slam final

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will meet for the 35th time in Sunday’s Wimbledon final with the Swiss star boasting an 18-16 career head-to-head lead. They have met 11 times at the majors with Federer leading 6-5.

They have contested just one previous grand slam final.

US Open 2007 final

Federer beat Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2) 6-4

– Federer captured his fourth consecutive US Open and 12th major overall despite being a break down in every set when 20-year-old Djokovic, who was playing in his first grand slam final, squandered a total of seven set points.

Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon and the US Open for four years in a row, and the first to win four straight US titles since Bill Tilden in 1923.

Who said what:

Federer

“I think straight sets was a bit brutal for Novak. He deserved better than that. He’s had a fantastic run, not only this tournament but the entire year. I told him at the net ‘keep it up.’ We’re going to have many more battles I think.”

Djokovic

“It’s been an amazing two weeks, an amazing experience for me and finally I got to my first grand slam final. Roger showed once again that he is the best and he deserved to win today. He was the better player.”
