Federer top seed at US Open tennis

Roger Federer will be the top-seeded men’s player at next week’s US Open.

The 17-time grand-slam champion was ranked No.1 in the latest ATP rankings released on Monday.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is seeded second and Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray third at the $US25.5 million ($A24.5 million) event.

With Rafael Nadal out with knee problems, fellow Spaniard David Ferrer is the No.4 seed.

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is seeded fifth, followed by Czech Tomas Berdych, Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, Serb Janko Tipsarevic, American John Isner and Juan Monaco of Argentina.

Federer has won five titles at Flushing Meadows, tied for most in the Open era.

He won Wimbledon this year and returned to the top of the rankings.
