Federer into Australian Open final

Roger Federer has booked his place in the Australian Open final, downing Stan Wawrinka in five sets to set up a potential showdown with old foe Rafael Nadal.

The four-time Open champion faded badly after a commanding start but regrouped to claim a 7-5 6-3 1-6 4-6 6-3 win over Swiss compatriot Wawrinka on Thursday night.

Federer will have the opportunity to add to his record 17 grand slam singles titles in Sunday’s final, where he will face either Nadal or Bulgarian 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov.
