Erakovic through to Wimbledon 3rd round

New Zealand tennis player Marina Erakovic has upstaged Chinese 24th seed Peng Shuai to reach the third round at Wimbledon.

World No.71 Erakovic won 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 on Thursday.

Erakovic matched her best result at Wimbledon, reaching the third round once before on her main draw debut in 2008.

She will next face either local hope Laura Robson or Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino, with their match postponed until Friday due to rain.

The 25-year-old Aucklander hit 24 winners and 14 unforced errors as she defeated Peng in one hour and 26 minutes.

“It was a good match,” Erakovic said.

“Really tight in the first set, it could have gone either way.

“I managed to play I think a really good tiebreak and then in the second I thought it was going to be another real battle but I kept at it, kept being aggressive, and I think she just let it slip a little bit.”

Erakovic also made the third round of the French Open last month.

“I think I’m playing well,” Erakovic said.

“The last few years I’ve started with a new coach Christian Zahalka, and we’ve been working hard on my game and trying to improve it.

“We have been really on the right track and hopefully that work now is paying off.”

Erakovic said she wasn’t daunted by the prospect of playing Robson on home soil, in a match that would likely be played on one of the main courts.

“I can be playing on any court. Of course if I’m playing on Centre Court, I’ve never played on Centre Court, so that’ll be a nice thing,” she said.

“But you go out and soak it in. Once the game starts, it’s sort of a blur.”
