New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic has endured a tough day at Wimbledon, suffered a heart-breaking defeat to home-town favourite Laura Robson in the third round singles before losing her second round doubles as well.
Erakovic missed a golden chance to achieve her best result in the singles at a grand slam, losing 1-6 7-5 6-3 to Robson on Saturday.
After a dominant first-set performance, the 25-year-old Aucklander served for the match at 5-4 up in the second set but double faulted at crucial times as Robson fought back in front of a parochial crowd on Court No.2.
World No.71 Erakovic matched her best grand slam result by reaching the third round, as she also did at the French Open last month.
Robson, 19, will face either American Alison Riske or Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round on Monday.
The day got worse for Erakovic as she and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black lost a tight doubles encounter to Canadian Eugenie Bouchard and Croatia’s Petra Martic 7-6 7-6.
