Ebden loses first up at Washington tennis

Australian Matthew Ebden lost his first-round match on Tuesday at the Washington Open tennis tournament.

Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain had little trouble accounting for Ebden 6-3 6-2.

Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine advanced to the second round with a 6-1 6-3 win over Italy’s Flavio Cipolla.

Dolgopolov needed less than an hour to down Cipolla, breaking the Italian four times without dropping his serve. The 23-year-old had lost his previous two matches against Cipolla, but relied on a blistering forehand to maintain control.

Mardy Fish, the top seed in the men’s draw, fellow American Sam Querrey and Germany’s Tommy Haas were slated to play their opening matches later on Tuesday.

On the women’s side, top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia won six of nine break-point chances to beat Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-4 6-3.
