Duckworth beaten in Brisbane International

Australian wildcard James Duckworth has been beaten in the opening round of the Brisbane International.

Duckworth took the first set against Austrian eighth seed Dominic Thiem on Pat Rafter Arena but the world No.20 rallied to win 3-6 6-4 6-3.

Davis Cup coach Wally Masur was among those in the stands on Tuesday watching world No.120 Duckworth, who won a wildcard entry into this month’s Australian Open in the playoff tournament.

Thiem will now play American Denis Kudla in the second round.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Belgian sixth seed David Goffin eliminated Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci in their opening round match while Serbia’s Viktor Troicki set up a second round match against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 win over American Steve Johnson.

Young Australian Oliver Anderson’s clash with fellow qualifier Ivan Dodig has been suspended due to rain.

The only seeded Australian in the tournament, Bernard Tomic, is in action on Tuesday evening when he plays France’s Nicolas Mahut on Pat Rafter Arena.
