Cibulkova has only lost nine games in total en route to her fourth round encounter against Maria Sharapova. The 20th seed has also only been on court for three hours and 33 minutes in comparison to Sharapova who has been on court six hours and 58 minutes in total.
Cibulkova upset former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the first round before cruising through her next two matches losing only two more games as she knocked out Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland and sixteenth seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
Sharapova won the Open back in 2008 and has reached the final and the semi-finals in the last two years respectively. The third seed defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the opening round before she scraped through a thrilling three set match against Karin Knapp in the soaring temperatures earlier in the week. Sharapova then defeated Alize Cornet to set up the fourth round encounter with Cibulkova.
The head to head record between the two stands at 3-2 in favour of Sharapova although they have never played against each other on hard court.
Sharapova should finish the match on top given she can stay consistent especially on serve. The former World No. 1 has served at least eight doubles faults in each one of her matches so far. Both players are known for their aggressive style and power so it should provide an entertaining match up.
The winner of the match will play the winner of Jelena Jankovic and Simona Halep in the quarter-final.
Sharapova and Cibulkova are scheduled to play at 11:00am (12:00am GMT) on 20 January 2014.
