Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson and fifth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov have reached the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open, but Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic won’t be joining them.
The ninth-seeded Serb unexpectedly fell in three sets 6-3 6-7 (7-5) 6-3 to Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday.
The victory for the 19-year-old means he’ll move on to the quarter-finals on Friday.
Earlier, fourth-seeded Anderson, who lost his Wimbledon bid last month to Djokovic, downed Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in straight sets. The big-serving sixth-ranked South African hit 15 aces and won 86 per cent of first serves in en route to the 7-5 6-3 victory.
Dimitrov had a tougher time in his round-of-16 match against American Frances Tiafoe. He won on a third-set tie-break – his second in as many days – when Tiafoe hit into the net to lose his fifth point in a row and go down 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 7-6 (7-4).
Dimitrov and Anderson will face each other on Friday for the eighth time. Dimitrov has won six of those matches, but Friday’s match will be his first quarter-final since the Barcelona Open in April. Anderson, 32, has been moving up in the rankings all year and now is sixth in the world, just one behind Dimitrov.
German defending champion Alexander Zverev is playing world No.68 Daniil Medvedev on Thursday.
Top-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal is set to play Stan Warwinka on Friday.
