Dimitrov among winners on busy US Open day

After a long day of waiting around, Grigor Dimitrov has made quick work of Vaclav Safranek when he finally did get to playing at the US Open.

Seventh-seeded Dimitrov recorded a convincing 6-1 6-4 6-2 victory over the Czech Republic qualifier, in less than two hours on Wednesday.

That will come in handy when he has to play again Thursday as the tournament tries to catch up after rain Tuesday prevented most matches from finishing.

Only nine matches were able to be completed Tuesday, including victories by top-ranked Rafael Nadal and five-time champion Roger Federer.

That gives them an advantage over many men, who faced first and second round matches in consecutive days.

Belgium’s ninth-seeded David Goffin beat French veteran Julien Benneteau 6-4 2-6 6-4 6-2 while 11th-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista was too good for Italian beat Andreas Seppi (Italy) 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(1)

Also advancing were 15th-seeded Tomas Berdych who beat American Ryan Harrison 6-4 6-2 7-6 (7-4).

The 18th-seeded Gael Monfils swept past fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-4.

Argentina’s 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, the 24th seed, overcame Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5).

Other seeded players to progress to the second round were Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

A number of seeds were eliminated with Italian Fabio Fognini, the 22nd seed, ousted by countryman Stefano Travaglia 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-0, 26th-seeded Richard Gasquet losing to Argentine Leonardo Mayer 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-2 and Damir Dzumhur defeating 27th-seeded Pablo Cuevas 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.

Other first-round winners included Americans Donald Young, Bjorn Fratangelo, Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine.
