Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro is into the fourth round, with the No. 24 seed beating 11th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-3 6-3 6-4 in a little more than two hours.
The Argentine won the 2009 US Open when he beat Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals and Roger Federer for the title. He also reached the quarter-finals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
Del Potro next faces No.6 seed Dominic Thiem.
David Goffin advanced to the fourth round after Frenchman Gael Monfils, the 18th seed, retired with an injury to his right knee.
Goffin, the ninth seed, was leading 7-5 5-1 when Monfils quit.
Meantime, Alexandr Dolgopolov is into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time in six years.
The Ukrainian routed Viktor Troicki 6-1 6-0 6-4 in a match that lasted just one hour and 22 minutes.
Dolgopolov was involved in a match recently in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, that’s under scrutiny because of unusual betting patterns.
Dolgopolov last reached the fourth round in 2011, when he lost to then world No.1 Novak Djokovic.
Dolgopolov’s best result in a grand slam tournament is the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier that year.
Tournament favourites Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are in action in Saturday’s late matches in New York.
