Danish teenager Clara Tauson paid tribute to Caroline Wozniacki after living up to her top seeding to win the Australian Open girls’ singles title at Melbourne Park.
A year after Wozniacki became Denmark’s first grand slam singles champion, Tauson outclassed Canadian fourth seed Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in the junior final on Saturday.
Coached by her father, just as Wozniacki is, 16-year-old Tauson dubbed the former world No.1 an idol.
“We say hi whenever we see each other. I’ve practised with her, too. Yeah, of course, she’s a big inspiration for everyone in Denmark playing tennis and other sports,” Tauson said.
Italian top seed Lorenzo Musetti saved two match points to deny American Emilio Nava 4-6 6-2 7-6 (14-12) in a marathon junior boys’ final that lasted more than two hours on Rod Laver Arena.
