Cilic, Wawrinka eliminated from Wimbledon

Men’s third seed Marin Cilic has been knocked out of Wimbledon following a shock five-set defeat to Argentina’s Guido Pella in the second round.

Cilic, who was beaten in last year’s final by Roger Federer, led by two sets when their contest, which started on Wednesday, was suspended by rain.

The Croatian world No.5 saved three match points but eventually fell to a 3-6 1-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 defeat on Thursday.

Pella, who is ranked 82nd in the world, will face American Mackenzie McDonald in the third round on Friday.

Meanwhile, American ninth seed John Isner avoided an upset by narrowly defeating Belgium’s Ruben Bemelman, who himself knocked Australia’s Bernard Tomic out of the tournament qualifiers, in a delayed second-round match.

The American ninth seed eventually won 6-1 6-4 6-7(3) 6-7(6) 7-5 but he came desperately close to another Wimbledon failure.

Isner now has the chance to record his best Wimbledon performance, having never been past the third round.

To achieve that he will have to get past Moldovan Radu Albot who beat Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in five sets.

Stan Wawrinka’s poor run at recent grand slams also continued with Swiss losing 7-6(7) 6-3 7-6(6) his second round match with Italian journeyman Thomas Fabbiano.

Since reaching least year’s French Open final Wawrinka has tumbled down the rankings from three to his current world No.224, mainly as a consequence of the knee surgery he required last year.

He lost in the first round of the French Open this year, the second round in Australia and at last year’s Wimbledon he was knocked out in round one. He did not play the US Open.

Fabbiano, ranked 133rd, goes on to play either American Jared Donaldson or Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round — the furthest he has ever been in a grand slam.
