Cabrera out in quarters at Guangzhou Open

Australian Lizette Cabrera has fallen short her first WTA semi-final berth after losing 6-1 7-6 to Evgeniya Rodina at the Guangzhou Open in China.

Cabrera, ranked 153 in the world, struggled on serve throughout the hour and 44 minute quarter-final, conceding three breaks to her Russian opponent in the opening set.

19-year-old Cabrera was broken four times in the second but also took four break points of her own before losing the tiebreaker 7-4.

It was the first time she has reached the quarter-finals of a WTA event, beating third-seeded Estonia Anett Kontaveit in straight-sets the previous day to do so.

Rodina will face Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova in the final four, while Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer deafeated sixth seed Alize Cornet to reach the semi-finals.

Wickmayer beat Cornet 6-1 7-6 and will next face Aleksandra Kunic of Serbia.
