Bouchard advances in three sets in WTA

Eugenie Bouchard has thrilled her hometown crowd with a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-3) victory over Lucie Safarova in the opening round of the women’s Rogers Cup.

Bouchard fell behind 3-1 in the tiebreaker, but then put up six straight points, securing the win when Safarova double-faulted on match point.

Bouchard has dropped to No.41 in the WTA rankings since her last Rogers Cup in Montreal in 2014, when she was ranked in the top 10, but ended up losing to a qualifier in the first round.

The tournament lost one of its stars when French Open champion and No.3-seed Garbine Muguruza withdrew with an illness, giving Naomi Broady a walkover win.

Top-seeded Serena Williams withdrew on Sunday.
