Barty starts well before rain stops play

Australian teenager Ashleigh Barty was matching it early with Russian 12th seed Maria Kirilenko before rain suspended play in their French Open second round clash on Thursday.

With the match only starting at 8.30pm local time (0430 Fri AEST) after a rain-interrupted day at Roland Garros, only six games were possible before the wet weather returned.

Barty, 17, had just broken back to square the match at 3-3 when play was abandoned, with the encounter set to resume on Friday morning (Friday night AEST).

Barty is bidding for an unlikely victory after an upset win over Czech Lucie Hradecka in the first round.

She’s attempting to become the second Australian woman in the third round after Samantha Stosur progressed with a 6-4 6-3 win over Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic earlier on Thursday.
