Teenager Ashleigh Barty has been named to replace the injured Casey Dellacqua in Australia’s team for the Hopman Cup staring later this month.
World No.175 Barty, the 2011 junior Wimbledon champion, will partner Bernard Tomic for the mixed pairs tournament to be played in Perth from December 29 to January 5.
With Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur committed to the Brisbane International, the 16-year-old Barty was called up after Dellacqua succumbed to a foot injury.
“I can’t wait,” said Barty on Tuesday.
“It will be an incredible experience and will be an amazing start to the summer for me.
“I’ve learnt so much this year and I think my game has matured a lot.”
The pair will go head-to-head against powerful teams such as Serbia (Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic) and the United States (John Isner and Venus Williams).
Dellacqua’s withdrawal has raised concerns she’ll struggle to be fit for next month’s Australian Open.
The world No.101 was looking forward to playing in front of her home crowd in Perth, but hasn’t overcome the injury picked up during a tournament in Osaka in October.
“Although it’s getting better every day, it’s not going to be ready in time (for the Hopman Cup) and I can’t rush my return to competition,” Dellacqua said in a statement.
“I really hope I can try and play in Hobart (from January 4) if I’m ready and if I get a wildcard.”
